Up for sale is a rare vintage Seiko Marvel 14038 Seikosha 17-jewel men’s classic dress watch, produced for the Japan Domestic Market (JDM) during the 1950s. The Seiko Marvel is one of Seiko’s most historically significant models, representing a major milestone in the company’s post-war development with its reliable in-house manual-wind movement and timeless dress watch styling. The watch is in full working condition and is running and holding accurate time over a 24-hour period. I believe the expandable stainless steel bracelet is original to the watch, but I cannot confirm this with certainty. All other parts of the watch are original. The case back is engraved with the following Japanese inscription: 賞 運輸大臣 1957 Which translates to: “Award” “Minister of Transport” “1957” This presentation engraving suggests the watch was awarded or commemorated by Japan’s Ministry of Transport in 1957, adding an interesting piece of historical provenance. The watch is in good vintage physical condition with signs of use and age. The dial has developed a beautiful natural patina over the decades, giving it an outstanding vintage character.
